Abstract of the book chapter:

In this chapter, we analyse practical teaching methods and teaching methods for the acquisition of transversal competences on the case of Slovenia. Practical teaching of students affects their competences and their ability to use the acquired skills in their working life. A huge number of transversal competences are required in practice and students can gain them via various practical teaching methods during their studies. In this chapter, we research the practice of teaching students and the use of teaching methods for the development of their competences from the perspective of Slovenian students and Slovenian education system. First, present the education system in Slovenia.  Then describe practical teaching methods used in formal learning in higher education in Slovenia. After the review of the literature and research known, our own study, which was conducted in the area under consideration on a sample of 120 students, is presented. Based on the results of the latter study, 15 most frequently used practical teaching methods in formal learning environment, based on the experiences of students at the University of Maribor, the Faculty of Economics and Business (UM EPF) are presented. We introduce practical examples of the use of different teaching methods in practical classes of selected business subjects at the UM EPF. In addition to the above, this chapter also presents an analysis of teaching methods for the acquisition of transversal competences in Slovenia. We describe how the UM EPF teaches entrepreneurship, communication skills, creativity and teamwork. For this purpose, we studied various subjects in undergraduate and postgraduate study programmes at the UM EPF. Based on all the research carried out on this topic, we conclude this chapter with some suggestions for the improvement of the learning process of transversal competences in Slovenia.
